Can I have my braces removed at a different orthodontist?

In most cases, it’s best to return to the orthodontist who originally placed your braces for removal. Your original provider understands your full treatment plan, progress, and clinical history, which helps ensure the safest and most effective outcome.

There are also ethical and continuity-of-care considerations involved, as orthodontic treatment is carefully planned from start to finish. Removing braces without full knowledge of your case may impact your final results.

If you’ve relocated or are unable to return to your original orthodontist, we recommend scheduling a consultation with Dr. Blair Cohen. Our team can evaluate your current treatment status and discuss the safest next steps.

Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?

Not at all. Orthodontic treatment is effective at any age. Many adults choose Invisalign® or braces to improve their smile, bite, and overall oral health.

What’s the difference between braces and Invisalign®?

Braces use brackets and wires to gradually move teeth, while Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners. Invisalign is more discreet and convenient, while braces may be better for more complex cases. During your consultation, we’ll help determine the best option for your needs.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment time varies depending on your case, but most patients complete treatment within 12 to 24 months. Some minor cases may take less time, while more complex cases may take longer.

Does orthodontic treatment hurt?

You may experience mild discomfort when braces are adjusted or when switching to a new set of aligners, but this typically subsides within a few days. Most patients find the process very manageable.

How much do braces or Invisalign cost?

The cost of treatment depends on the complexity of your case and the type of treatment you choose. At Dr. Blair Orthodontics, we offer flexible financing options to make treatment affordable for every patient.

Do I need to wear a retainer after treatment?

Yes. Retainers are essential to maintain your results after orthodontic treatment. Teeth can shift over time, so wearing your retainer as instructed helps preserve your new smile.

How often will I need to visit the orthodontist?

Most patients visit every 6–8 weeks for adjustments or progress checks. Invisalign patients may have slightly different schedules depending on their treatment plan.

What foods should I avoid with braces?

If you have braces, you should avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods such as popcorn, nuts, caramel, and chewing gum, as these can damage brackets and wires.

Can I still play sports or instruments with braces?

Yes. We recommend wearing a mouthguard during sports to protect your teeth and braces. Most patients quickly adjust to playing instruments with braces as well.

Why is orthodontic treatment important?

Orthodontic treatment not only improves the appearance of your smile but also enhances oral health by correcting bite issues, reducing wear on teeth, and making oral hygiene easier.
