Getting your braces off is a big moment—your smile is straighter, brighter, and you finally get to enjoy the results you worked hard for. While finishing treatment is exciting, keeping that smile in top shape is just as important as creating it.
We’ve helped countless patients finish their journey with braces in West Palm Beach, and we know that maintaining your results takes the right habits and a bit of long-term planning. Here’s what life after braces looks like, and how to protect your investment for years to come.

Maintain a Straighter Smile with These Tips
1. Wear Your Retainer (Seriously)
This is the #1 rule after braces: wear your retainer as directed. Your teeth naturally want to shift back to their original positions, especially right after treatment. A retainer prevents this from happening and helps your teeth stabilize in their new alignment.
There are different types of retainers:
- Removable retainers (clear or wire) are easy to wear and clean
- Fixed retainers are bonded behind your teeth for continuous support
Your orthodontist will give you specific wear instructions, often full-time at first, then transitioning to nighttime wear. Skipping your retainer—even for a short time—can lead to unwanted movement and lost progress.
2. Keep Up with Good Oral Hygiene
Now that your teeth are beautifully aligned, it’s time to keep them healthy. Straight teeth are easier to clean, but good habits are still essential:
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
- Floss daily (a water flosser can make it easier around a fixed retainer)
- Use mouthwash to reduce bacteria and keep your breath fresh
- Schedule professional cleanings every 6 months
Maintaining excellent hygiene helps prevent decay, gum disease, and stains that can undo the aesthetic benefits of orthodontic treatment.
3. Be Gentle on Your Smile
Even though your braces are off, your teeth are still settling into place. Avoid habits that can add pressure or cause damage, like:
- Chewing ice or hard candies
- Using your teeth to open packages
- Grinding or clenching your teeth (consider a nightguard if needed)
These habits can wear down enamel, shift teeth, or even damage your retainer.
4. Watch for Shifting or Changes
Even with a retainer, your bite can change over time due to age, jaw development, or dental work. If you notice any of the following symptoms, contact your orthodontist:
- Tightness when putting in your retainer
- Teeth that appear to be moving
- Discomfort in your bite or jaw
The sooner we address shifting, the easier it is to correct.
5. Protect Your Smile During Sports or Activities
If you play contact sports or engage in activities with a risk of injury, wear a custom mouthguard to protect your teeth, retainer, and jaw. Mouthguards can prevent chips, fractures, or more serious trauma.
We can create a custom-fit mouthguard that’s comfortable and protective, especially important if you’re still wearing a fixed retainer.
