Injuries to the mouth during orthodontic treatment can occasionally occur. At Dr. Blair Orthodontics, dental emergencies related to braces or other orthodontic appliances generally fall into two categories.
Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances
Sometimes, appliances may become broken or bent. If you experience issues such as loose bands, loose brackets, or broken or poking wires, please call our office during patient hours to schedule an appointment. We cannot accommodate walk-ins for emergencies to ensure the convenience of all our patients. In the meantime, here are some tips to manage common issues until you can visit us:
Irritating Tie Wires: If a tie wire is causing irritation, cover it with beeswax or gently tuck it under the archwire using a blunt object like a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
Loose Bands or Brackets: If you notice a loose band or bracket, it can typically remain in place until your appointment. Call Dr. Blair Orthodontics during patient hours to arrange a time for reattachment.
Broken or Poking Archwires: You can often bend a broken wire back into place with a pencil eraser or cut it with nail clippers. If the problem persists, please call our office for further guidance.
Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth
If you are directly injured to your mouth or teeth, whether or not you are currently in treatment, apply ice to the affected area and contact your general dentist as soon as possible. An X-ray may be necessary to assess the severity of the injury.
If a tooth is knocked out or fractured, your family dentist should be your first point of contact, as we may not have the materials or anesthesia needed for immediate treatment. Once you’ve been to your dentist, we can help adjust or replace any displaced appliances as needed.
After Office Hours
If you experience pain from an orthodontic emergency outside of office hours, please reach out to Dr. Blair Orthodontics for guidance on whom to contact for assistance.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure that you address any orthodontic emergencies effectively and promptly, helping to maintain your journey toward a healthy, beautiful smile. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please call our office.
